Selene and Endymion, Gerard de Lairesse.
The chaste moon goddess Selene (or Diana) loves the shepherd Endymion. Only at night, when he's asleep, does she quietly sneak up on him, accompanied by Amor. His torch symbolizes the burning love. In Soestdijk Palace, this painting hung in Mary Stuart's bedroom. An appropriate theme. De Lairesse thought it was important that the function and the decoration of a room had to be right.
