Sitting Buddha with long ears, Sri Lanka. One of the 4 granite statues of Gal Vihara. A lane along a water basin leads to the Gal Vihara, the famous rock temple with four huge statues carved out of the granite rock from the middle of the 12th century. Inscriptions have been made in the rock face. Originally, the rock temple was part of a monastery complex from the time of Parakrama Bahu i, the Uttarama (northern monastery). Facing the temple you will see the sitting Buddha in meditation on the left and behind him a kind of halo of sculpture. Then, on the right, a simple colonnade gives access to the statue house in the rock, with statues of Buddha and some Hindu gods. In front of the colonnade a bo-boom has been planted.
