Looked at properly, this is a beautiful colour plate you won't get tired of easily. A Dünnschliff is a grinding plate. A grinding plate or thin section is a very thin slice of a rock, which can be viewed under the microscope. If the thickness of the slab is made slightly smaller than the diameter of individual crystals in the rock, the crystals can be viewed individually so that the minerals in question can be accurately determined. Usually, grinding plates are therefore ground 30 μm thick. The thickness of the grinding plate is important to determine the refractive index and double refraction of different minerals.
