About ‘Schiedam / Long harbour during sunrise’ by Ellen Driesse

The Lange Haven is a harbour with a length of approximately 550 metres in the centre of the Zuid-Holland town of Schiedam.

The Lange Haven forms the connection between the Schiedamse Schie near the Beursbrug and the Buitenhaven near the Koemarktbrug. Halfway the Lange Haven lies the Appelmarktbrug, a cast iron drawbridge built around 1860. When a boat sails through the harbour, this bridge is pulled up by hand by two bridge keepers. At the end of the Lange Haven lies the Koemarkt bridge. Between the Appelmarkt bridge and the Koemarkt bridge lies the Taan bridge. This bridge was built in 2017 in the same style as the Appelmarktbrug.

Along Lange Haven there are several dozen national monuments:

the Jenevermuseum (Schiedam)
St John the Baptist Church or Harbor Church
Gatenburgh, the patrician house at Lange Haven 107
Merchant's house at 141 Long Harbour
The House Nolet
Along the walkways of Lange Haven there is a series of decorative iron gas lanterns, nowadays designed for sodium light, which are also considered a 'national monument'. In the water there are a number of houseboats, some of which have also been granted the status of National Monument.
