About ‘Sardine on a persimmon-orange ceramic spoon’ by Max Steinwald

Here, the classic kitchen scene is reduced to its most basic forms. Free from rustic embellishments, the sardine rests as a purely sculptural object upon the solid form of the spoon. It is a play on extreme proportions and clear blocks of colour that transforms everyday cuisine into a modern, gallery-worthy aesthetic and fills the space with a calm clarity.

The conceptual basis of this work is the deliberate alienation from traditional food presentation. Rather than whetting the appetite, the motif is translated into a purely sculptural, objective context. The inspiration stems from the clear formal language of graphic design and colour-blocking: through radical scaling and the complete absence of interpretative embellishments, the biological authenticity of the motif enters into a compelling, purely aesthetic dialogue with the artificially smooth colour planes of the background.
