About "Samson destroys the pillars of the temple, Johannes Josephus Aarts"

About the artwork

Samson was, according to tradition in the Hebrew Bible, a judge of the Israelites. We read about him in Judges 13-16. Unlike the other judges, he did not so much lead the Israelites, but with God's help he did fight against the Philistines. He belonged to the tribe of Dan. His father's name was Manoah.

The Philistines held a sacrificial feast in the temple of Dagan in honor of Samson's capture. He was called to entertain the crowd. Over three thousand men had gathered on the roof to witness the spectacle. Once inside the temple, Samson asked the servant who brought him in if he could lean against a pillar. Samson then asked God if he could regain his strength one more time (his hair had grown back) so he could knock down two central temple pillars. His request was granted, the entire temple collapsed and he died along with everyone in it. This killed more Philistines than he had killed in total during his lifetime.

Johannes Josephus Aarts (The Hague, August 18, 1871 - Amsterdam, October 19, 1934) was a Dutch painter, draughtsman, lithographer, engraver, etcher, publicist, illustrator, teacher at academy, director of academy, professor, sculptor and book designer.

Jan Aarts studied at the Academy of Art in The Hague. He worked in The Hague until 1911, and in Amsterdam from 1911 to 1934.
