The figure of Saint Francis of Assisi is known for his focus on penitence and religious devotion. In this painting the artist refers to the last month of the saint's life, which he spent in seclusion with his assistant. Saint Francis is shown with a skeleton, meditating on death and its consequences. The painter showed the influence of his Venetian education in his use of dry brushstrokes to create a coarse texture for the man's clothing, a reference to the Franciscan belief in the ideal of poverty.
Domenikos Theotokopoulos (Fodele, Kandia or Iraklion on Crete, Greece 1541 - Toledo, Spain 7 April 1614), commonly known as El Greco, was a painter who worked mainly in Spain.
After a training in the art of icons on Crete, El Greco travelled to Rome, where he studied under Titian. His style of painting belongs to Mannerism, an art movement of the High Renaissance.
