About ‘Sailing Through the Moonlight’ by Anouk

Sometimes everything suddenly lines up at exactly the right moment. For this photograph, I noticed a sailboat-shaped weathervane positioned perfectly in front of the Moon. With the Moon appearing so large in the background, the simple silhouette of the little boat suddenly became much more interesting than you would normally expect.

What I especially like about this image is how simple the composition actually is. A dark night sky, the bright Moon and the black silhouette of the sailboat in front of it. Because there is almost nothing else in the frame, all the attention goes straight to the shape of the boat and the texture of the lunar surface.

The craters and different light and dark areas of the Moon are clearly visible, while the silhouette creates a very strong contrast against it. It almost gives the photograph a graphic quality.

For me, this is one of those photographs where timing and perspective just happened to come together perfectly. Nothing complicated, just a small sailboat silhouette appearing in exactly the right place in front of the Moon.
