About ‘Sagres, Algarve Portugal. Cape St Vincent’ by Ruud Langendijk

Cape St Vincent in Portugal is the most south-westerly point of mainland Europe, the cape is located in the Algarve region of Portugal five kilometres west of Ponta de Sagres and 40 kilometres west of Lagos. In the past, many naval battles were fought at this desolate spot. Cape St Vincent is located on the Vincentina coast and this coast or headland is part of the Southwest Alentejo and Costa Vincentina Natural Park.

The cliffs have a height of up to about 75 metres and many birds nest here such as the hawk eagle, peregrine falcon, kite, rock dove, and monticola.

The current 28-metre-high lighthouse was built in 1846 within the walls of a fort.

The Cape Saint-Vincent lighthouse is an important beacon on this Atlantic coast, a busy shipping route. Its powerful lights have a range of about 60 kilometres.
