I can also really enjoy a minimalist photo. If the light is a bit monotone and, as here, the hues of the sky reflect in the water and the transition to the horizon is even, you can isolate an object nicely.
This pole caught my eye because it is beautifully rusted by the elements, giving it all sorts of colours. By choosing a long shutter speed, the water became flat, giving the image around the pole a nice look.
I have been photographing since I was little, but the beauty of nature is something I really started to see by actively photographing landscapes and nature. By consciously standing still and taking in your surroundings you learn to look and feel differently.
