A map of Europe like rust spots on the hull of an old ship. Scratches, puncture marks, peeling paint and fascinating patterns in fifty shades of rusty brown.
Where did you photograph this boat, Mr Blok? No, appearances are deceiving; this map was digitally generated. But then again, without artificial intelligence; pure human creativity underlies this extraordinary map of our continent.
Where are in fact the borders of Europe? Or is Europe just an appendage to Asia. The latter seems the case, doesn't it? Officially, the Urals form the eastern border, but of course that is a rather arbitrary choice. Seen that way, Europe is more a cultural and political than a geographical entity. But even in that sense, the borders are not hard.
Anyway, that jagged landmass we call Europe is captured here with all its surrounding islands, peninsulas, gulfs and seas. With all its rusty brown shapes and textures, our continent looks like a unity in diversity.
