About "Ruins of My Son Sanctuary"

by Ron Poot

About the artwork

Between the cities of Hoi An and Da Nang lie the ruins of the My Son Sanctuary temple complex. It is a remnant of the Champa kingdom. The temples of My Son were the most important temples of the kingdom.
The entire complex consists of 70 buildings dedicated to Hindu gods and goddesses.

After the fall of the Champa kingdom, the temples were overgrown by the jungle. It was only in 1898 that the French discovered the temple remains. They embarked on a major restoration project.

During the Vietnam War, the Viet Cong used the temple complex as a base. During the war, much was destroyed by bombing. The bomb craters are still visible. Fortunately, not everything was destroyed and there are still large parts that can be restored.

My Son means 'beautiful mountain' and it got that name for a reason. It is surrounded by green jungle and impressive peaks.

For tourists, there is a cultural dance show at the site every morning, a group of dancers perform traditional dances of the Champ culture.
