Obere Sachsenburg is a ruined castle near Sachsenburg, a district of the town and rural municipality of An der Schmücke in the Kyffhäuserkreis in Thuringia. Sachsenburg is situated on a mountain above Hakenburg. The palace with its numerous stone carvings and the keep have been preserved. The complex has been in ruins since the 17th century, but has been well preserved due to its seclusion.
The complex consists of a palace and a keep. It is surrounded by a ring ditch, which today houses the hiking trail. Parts of the ring wall that completely surrounded Burg Sachsenburg can still be seen from the ring ditch. The keep still exists up to the roof and has only been partially restored. The palace is very interesting. The outer walls are still completely preserved up to the height of the eaves. Numerous beam supports, fireplaces, window seats and a balcony, which is in good condition on the second floor but not accessible, can be seen. Some of the numerous Gothic round-arched windows still exist, but most of them have been refitted with struts and reconstructed.
