About ‘Rue Nôtre-Dame, Paris, Johan Barthold Jongkind’
Rue Nôtre-Dame, Paris, Johan Barthold Jongkind, 1866 After gaining fame with Norman harbour scenes, Jongkind chose a different subject in the summer of 1866: the renovations and extensions of Paris. In this little street, he concentrated on the play of bright sunlight and strong shadows. He used light tones and quick, loose brushstrokes. This new sunny tone and modern subject matter were emulated by the later Impressionists.
