The sculpture The Destroyed City by Ossip Zadkine brings the bombardment of May 14, 1940 in remembrance. The bronze statue of a human figure without a heart, which in desperation stretches the arms to heaven, symbolizes the city's heart lost in that war crime.
At the unveiling of the monument in 1953, the area around was still largely a barren plain. Nowadays fortunately it's part of a rebuilt and revived city. In this picture we see the Maritime Museum on the left and the (former) Robeco Tower on the right.
