The Obelisco Agonale is a 16.55 metre high Roman obelisk. It rises above Bernini's Fountain of the Four Rivers in the centre of Piazza Navona. This obelisk, which was brought from the archaeological sites of Aswan without inscriptions by order of Domitian, was decorated in Rome with original inscriptions in hieroglyphics and with a depiction of the emperor between two gods. It is made of granite and is almost 17 metres high.
With its façades - both simple buildings and those as splendidly elaborate as those of Palazzo Pamphile or the church of Sant'Agnese in Agone - Piazza Navona is one of the most beautiful Baroque squares in Rome. The shape of the square reflects the boundaries of the ancient stadium.
There are three Baroque fountains in the square: in the centre is the famous Four Rivers Fountain by Bernini, while the Neptune Fountain and the Moor Fountain are located on the two narrow sides.
