About ‘Rome - Fontana del Moro in Piazza Navona’ by Thomas Bugdoll

Piazza Navona is one of the most beautiful and best-known squares in the centre of Rome. Emperor Domitian had this square laid out in its striking elongated shape in 86 AD.

The Fontana del Moro (Fountain of the Moor) is the southernmost of the three fountains in Piazza Navona. It was built by Giacomo della Porta in 1574-1576 and features four tritons and other figures. In 1654, the fountain was reworked by Gian Lorenzo Bernini on behalf of Olimpia Maidalchini, with the addition of the central statue "il Moro", an Ethiopian fighting with a dolphin. The original statues can be found in the Villa Borghese park in Rome.
