The roller (Coracias garrulus) is a bird in the family of the roller (Coraciidae). The roller grows to be about 30 centimeters long and weighs 127 to 154 grams. It has a large head and a powerful, thick, black bill. The plumage is bright light blue with deep blue small wing coverts, rump and parts of the underwing. The back is brown, the wing tips and the top of the tail are black. Juvenile birds are fainter and have a lighter brown back. Scarce birds can often be found sitting on a lookout, such as a telephone pole, wire or branch. From this position, they may pounce on prey crawling across the ground, then return to their post to feast on it.
