Views of the beautiful coastline in the St Abbs Head Nature Reserve in the south-east of Scotland. In the photo you look south, to the village of St Abbs with the beach in front of it. The view here is magnificent.
The nature reserve is a beautiful area with rocks that rise up to 91 meters above the North Sea. The rocky coastline has formed over millions of years. St Abbs Head itself (not pictured) is a headland created by lava flowing from volcanoes. Wind and water released their forces on the rock and formed rugged rock formations. The cliffs with steep gorges became excellent breeding grounds for seabirds. More than 50,000 birds nest here in May and June.
The history of St Abbs goes back a long way, the earliest remains of human settlement date back to the Iron Age. St Abbs takes its name from the 7th century female saint Æbbe. She established a monastery on what is now called St Abbs Head headland.
St Abbs is also the location where the film Avengers: Endgame was filmed for two days. The town was called New Asgard in the movie. The Scottish Borders Council has placed signs in the village after filming to indicate that the place is 'twinned' with New Asgard, which tourists and fans of the film love.
