On 21 September 1961, the Renault 4 celebrated its world premiere at the IAA in Frankfurt as the successor to the Renault 4 CV Cremeschnittchen. In Germany at the beginning reviled by customers, revolver gearshift, camping chairs as seating in front and back, 23 hp provided only 85 km/h top speed and side windows that could be opened manually.
For it a huge tailgate, an unbeatable price of only 3.850,- DM, consumption around 6,5 L petrol/100 km (Renault 3 with 5,0 L petrol/100 km), 3-speed gearbox and long suspension struts and a variable interior with seats to remove (passenger seat and back seat)! And of course not to forget the front-wheel drive, it was the first French car that went into series production.
