The Renault 16 (1965-1980) was the European Car of the Year in 1966 and was the first five-door hatchback saloon in the mid-size class with over 1.8 million units sold.
In 1961, the then chief designer Gaston Juchet (* 1930-† 2007) was commissioned by Renault boss Richard Dreyfus to design the successor to the Renault Frégate (1951-1960), the Renault 16 with the project number 115.
The mixture or design of front-engine, front-wheel drive and hatchback, i.e. the combination of estate car and family-friendly saloon with folding seats and large rear tailgate, became the standard in the compact class in the 1970s.
