About the artwork

View of Amsterdam from the northwest, Rembrandt van Rijn, ca. 1641

The city skyline. Amsterdam is the capital of the Netherlands. The city, also called Mokum in Amsterdam, lies in the province of North Holland, on the IJ, the North Sea Canal and the Amstel estuary.

black chalk, h 86mm × w 164mm

In Rembrandt's time, the Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal was still an imposing canal. He stood here with his sketchbook facing south. With great virtuosity and speed, he drew the houses and trees on both sides of the canal and the Weessluis, the bridge between the St. Luciënsteeg and the Rosmarijnsteeg. With just a few strokes of the chalk, he set the surface of the water slightly in motion.

Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn (Leiden, 15 July 1606 - Amsterdam, 4 October 1669) was a Dutch painter, etcher and draughtsman. He is generally regarded as one of the greatest painters and etchers in European art, and as the most important Dutch master of the 17th century. His work belongs to the Baroque period and is visibly influenced by Caravaggism. His remarkable mastery of the play of light and dark, often using sharp contrasts (chiaroscuro) to draw the viewer into the picture, led to lively and dramatic scenes.
