Jan Luyken, 1696 etching.
The historic town of Reimerswaal, also known as Rommerswael or Reymerswael, was situated on Zuid-Beveland on the south bank of the Oosterschelde estuary, about four kilometres southwest of the town of Tholen. During the late Middle Ages, it was the third city of Zeeland after Middelburg and Zierikzee. Since the beginning of the eighteenth century, Reimerswaal has been a drowned village. At the end of the seventeenth century a small island with some ruins remained of Reimerswaal. At the beginning of the eighteenth century this last remnant also disappeared in the waves.
Jan Luyken or Johannes Luiken (Amsterdam, Holland, Netherlands, 16 April 1649 - Amsterdam, 5 April 1712) was a poet, painter and etcher from the 17th century.
