About ‘Registan Square in Samarkand, Uzbekistan’ by Rini Kools

Registan is the main square in the historic heart of Samarkand in Uzbekistan. The square is surrounded by three madrassas or Koranic schools. The Ulugh Beg madrassa is on the left on the picture. It is named after its founder Ulug Bey and was built in the period 1417 to 1420. In the tiling stars can be seen because of Ulug Bey's love for astronomy.
The Sher Dor stands on the right and was built in the period 1619-1636. The name means Lion bearer and the tiling depicts tigers and people, something that is not allowed according to the Koran.
The Tilla Kari (in the middle) was built in the period 1646-1660. It has a large prayer hall with a dome and also served as a Friday mosque.
