About ‘Reflection in water at Madrassa Ben Youssef’ by Margot van den Berg

In the medina, Marrakesh's old town, there are hidden gems. Some so beautiful that they appear in almost all guidebooks. Too bad for the enthusiast, because you are not alone, but understandable.

This is one such gem: the Madrassa Ben Youssef. An ancient, historic Koranic school built in the 14th century by order of one of the Merinid sultans.

The building stands around a courtyard. The school rooms are downstairs; upstairs are the simple dormitories for the boys.
The walls surrounding the courtyard are beautifully decorated with tiling and plaster decorations. A fine example of original craftsmanship. The courtyard itself is covered with smooth stones containing a water basin with zellige-tiled walls and floor.

In the picture, the wall with ornate plasterwork, windows and the decorated overhanging roof moulding reflect in the mirror-smooth water of the pond. And blends there with the pattern and colours of the basin's tiling.

The abstract picture tells the story of this medrassa. Once one of the most important Koranic schools in the Arab world, now a UNESCO world heritage site.
