A text on the wall of his exhibition read, "The large paintings in this exhibition should be viewed up close. By this he meant that a viewer had to get very close to his work, even to the point where the work could no longer be surveyed in a glance.
Then you disappear into the painting.
Newman wanted his paintings to evoke an emotion. He wanted to achieve that the viewer, standing in front of his work, became aware of himself and his place in the universe.
The vertical lines provide some guidance.
