Amsterdam is a city with a rich history and vibrant culture. The pink neighbourhood, also known as the Red Light District, is one of the most famous and oldest parts of the city.
Here you will find a mix of eroticism, art, religion and history. The pink neighbourhood is also a place where prostitution is tolerated, meaning it is not legal, but not prohibited either.
This tolerated policy is unique in the world and has to do with the tolerant and pragmatic attitude of the Dutch.

As a photographer, I wanted to capture this contrast: the emptiness in an area that is otherwise so full of life. I also wanted to show that the pink neighbourhood is more than just sex: it is part of Amsterdam's identity and history.
