This picture shows clearly how the colour of the stones changes due to weathering and oxidation. In this part of Etna, the lava rocks are no longer recent, but older and exposed to oxygen, moisture and weathering for a long time. This oxidises the iron naturally present in the rock, a process similar to the rusting of metal. This oxidation changes the colour of the originally black lava rocks to red to brownish tones. This indicates that this is older volcanic material, as opposed to the deep black appearance of more recent lava flows.
