The famous Dutch painter Gerard Dou created the original work around ca. 1631 -1632. It shows an old woman reading in the Bible.
The Bible, a states translation, is rendered in such detail that it is clear to see what the woman is reading: the beginning of the nineteenth chapter of the Gospel of Luke. It says that those who really want to do good should give as much of their possessions as possible to the poor. In stark contradiction to this message is the expensive clothing of the old woman: she is still attached to earthly possessions.
This work has been transformed into a new master. Above the Bible now hangs a modern lamp powered by electricity. Art with a wink!
