Rapeseed (Brassica napus) is an annual or biennial plant in the cruciferous family (Brassicaceae). The plant is very similar to rape (Brassica rapa subsp. oleifera). However, rapeseed flowers a bit later, and can be distinguished from rapeseed by the fact that the buds of the unopened flowers are higher than the flowers, while in rapeseed the flowers cover the buds. Rapeseed can either be self-pollinated or pollinated by bees or bumblebees. Products of the rapeseed plant, in addition to rapeseed oil and straw, are rapeseed meal that remains after pressing. It is rich in unsaturated fatty acids, proteins, vitamins and minerals and sought after as a concentrated feed for livestock. It is an alternative to imported soy.Rapeseed is an important field crop worldwide. In parts of Europe, the bright yellow fields attract many day visitors during the months of April and May.
