Rapenburg is the most famous canal of Leiden.
The canal runs from the Breestraat-Kort Rapenburg-Noordeinde crossing to the bridge at the Doezastraat, from which point the water continues as the Steenschuur and flows past the Van der Werfpark. Originally, Rapenburg went to Galgewater (Old Rhine). Short Rapenburg, the section between Noordeinde and Galgewater, was overtaken in 1911 for the sake of increasing traffic.
Rapenburg until 1389 was a western moat and the southern edge of the center of Leiden; The name 'Rapenburg' is first mentioned in 1360.
