The flowering period runs from April into June. A special type of cultivated tulips are the 'botanical tulips' (also known as wild tulips), short-stemmed tulips that also come out the years after the planting year.
The tulip has many mutations that give new colours and variations. These mutated tulips used to be very valuable, as they enabled a new line for breeding with interesting new colours. Growers can also make new colours by crossing tulips.
Some cultivars, cultivars, are striped or mottled in colour. These effects are caused by a viral infection of the bulb and are not transmitted to a new generation when raised from seed.
Several cultivars are named after well-known people or things.
