About the artwork

Railway yard in Abstract Expressionist style.

A railway yard is a complex of railway tracks and associated facilities where trains are arranged, assembled and/or stationed.
The yard consists of several railway lines connected by points. These switches allow trains to be routed from one track to another, allowing shunting and moving trains. The main purpose of a yard is to arrange trains, meaning that train cars are organised in the order in which they will continue their journey. This can be done by assembling, splitting or rearranging trains according to their destinations.

Abstract expressionism is an influential art movement that peaked in the 1940s and 1950s, mainly in the United States. It is a form of modern art that focuses on expressing emotions and ideas through abstract forms, colours and movements. Artists of this movement placed a strong emphasis on expressing inner emotions and feelings in their work. They often used powerful, spontaneous brushstrokes and gestures to convey a sense of energy and vitality. Abstract expressionist art is often non-figurative, meaning it does not contain recognisable representations or images of reality. Instead, artists used shapes, lines, colours and textures to create abstract compositions that stimulate the viewer's imagination.
