I made this image on a small canal where a stone bridge ties two weathered facades together. The light was soft and the water carried a clear reflection of windows and brick. I was interested in the texture of age and the gentle curve that pulls the eye under the arch.
I worked handheld with a measured exposure to balance highlight and shadow. Notice a few vines at the edge, painted doors that bear a scuff of time, and a moored boat that keeps the scene human. Color stays natural so the photograph can live with warm walls and wood.
The feeling I wanted is close and welcoming. For me it is about the everyday grace of Venice, where small passages become quiet stages.
