Prairie dogs (Cynomys) are a genus of subterranean rodents of the family squirrels (Sciuridae). They occur on the prairies of North America. The animals can be about 40 cm long and weigh between 1 and 4 kg. In captivity they can live to be 8 to 10 years old with peaks up to 12 years. Fresh grass is the most commonly used food. The animal owes its name to the sharp barking it makes.
Prairie dogs are social animals that live together in several family groups in one area: a so-called prairie dog village. These villages are located underground, where each family has its own entrance with several rooms.
