Prairie dogs; Cynomys; are a genus of rodents from the squirrel family living on and under the ground; Sciuridae; . The animals can grow up to 40 cm long and weigh between 1 and 4 kg. In captivity they can live to be 8 to 10 years old with peaks to 12 years. Fresh grass is the most commonly used food. The animal's name is due to the sharp barking it makes itself heard. Prairie dogs are social animals, which live together in several family groups in one area: a so-called prairie dog village. These villages are located underground, with each family having its own entrance with several rooms.
