The original Prague castle dates back to 880 and was founded by Borovoj, the oldest known prince of the Przemyslids. Today's buildings are anchored in three style periods: Romanesque, Gothic and Classicism. The beginning was made by Prince Wenceslaus I. On the "Hill of the Gods" in 925 he had a round building built as a safe shrine for the hand of Saint Vitus. In the 11th century the fortress, enclosed by wooden poles, was replaced by a stone fortress by King Bretislav I.
Prague Castle is one of the largest closed palace complexes in the world. The front alone is half a kilometre long. It is the largest castle in the world, covering an area of 7.5 hectares.
