Inuit is the name by which the Eskimo's of Canada and Greenland refer to themselves. The word inuit is the plural of inuk, which means human or real human in Inuktitut.
The word Inuit is also used as an alternative to the designation Eskimo, as that term is considered offensive by some Inuit. The 1977 Inuit Circumpolar Conference in Barrow, Alaska, decided to substitute the word Eskimo for Inuit as an umbrella term, regardless of what local names are in use and also for minorities that do not belong to it, such as the Joepiken, who are closely related to Inuit. This advice is not widely followed in Dutch. The Joepiken prefer to refer to themselves as Eskimo. In the Netherlands, the Arctic Peoples Alert Foundation represents the interests of the Inuit.
