About the artwork

Portrait of a curlew in Art Nouveau style

"Wulp" is the Dutch name of, the "Numenius arquata" . It is a large wading bird with a long curved bill, mainly found in marshes and wet meadows. The curlew has a distinctive call that resembles "curlew curlew" .

Art Nouveau is an art movement that developed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It is characterised by elegance, organic forms and decorative ornamentation. The term "Art Nouveau" means "new art" in French.

Organic shapes: Inspired by natural forms, such as flowers, plants and animals, organic and stylised shapes were often used in Art Nouveau designs.

Decorative ornaments: Abundant use of decorative elements, scrolls, and floral motifs were typical of Art Nouveau art.

Asymmetry: Art Nouveau tended towards asymmetrical compositions, where design elements were not arranged strictly symmetrically.

Use of new materials: Artists and designers experimented with new materials and technologies of the time, such as wrought iron, stained glass and ceramics.

Applied art: Art Nouveau influenced several art forms, including architecture, furniture design, jewellery, glassware, and posters.
