Located on the Mongolian plateau, the country has a continental climate with tundra's and steppe areas in the north, mountainous terrain (Altaj) in the centre, and desert (Gobi) in the south. About 42% of the, mostly Buddhist, population lives in the capital Ulaanbaatar. The population lives predominantly nomadically in traditional felt tents, ger also called yurt, and meets its livelihood needs through cattle breeding. Sheep, horses and camels are kept in free-roaming herds. There is some industry in the north of the country in the form of timber processing and mining. Over 80% of the population belongs to the Khalkha Mongol ethnic group.
