Portrait of Hendrick de Hartog, Adriaan de Lelie, 1790
On Monday evening Hendrick gave the Hartog mathematics lessons at the Maatschappij Felix Meritis. When he was appointed by the Dutch East India Company as examiner of the mates, he had this portrait made. On the table are a telescope and a sextant. De Hartog had developed a new, usable calculation method to determine the distance to the moon at sea.
