Portrait of Alida Christina Assink, Jan Adam Kruseman, 1833
Dressed entirely in the latest fashion, Alida Assink poses here for society painter Kruseman. The clothing gives her a fashionable silhouette: broad shoulders, puffed sleeves and a hoop skirt make her waist appear very slender. The large belt buckle puts extra emphasis on the waist. Kruseman was an admirer of English portrait painting. The rural setting with hunting dog and garden vase goes back to English examples.
