About ‘Portrait of Albert Verwey, Jan Veth’
Portrait of Albert Verwey, Jan Veth, 1885 oil on canvas, h 112cm × w 80cm.
The poet Verwey was the young foreman of the Tachtigers, a group of writers and artists who wanted to shake up cultural life around 1885. Unlike most of his comrades, he was of working-class descent. In this portrait, fellow Eighties artist Jan Veth has captured both Verwey's simple background and his rebellion. The portrait can therefore count as the representation of the Beweging van Tachtig.
