The Port of Rotterdam is the largest port and industrial complex in Europe with a total cargo throughput of 470 million tonnes in 2019. It consists of a combination of various harbour basins and industrial sites that serve the supply and transport of goods of the (petro)chemical and other industries located at the ports, and the storage and transhipment of goods of third parties for further transport. Rotterdam was the largest port in the world between 1962 and 2004, but this position has been taken over by Shanghai. Singapore, Canton, Qingdao, Port Hedland and Tianjin have also surpassed Rotterdam in size. However, Rotterdam is still by far the largest port in Europe.
