Porsche 917 classic Le Mans race car. The Porsche 917 is one of the most iconic race cars in motorsport history, designed to secure Porsche’s dominance in endurance racing. Built for the FIA’s Group 4 Sports Prototype regulations, it debuted in 1969 and became infamous for both its blistering speed and early instability.
Constructed around an ultra-light aluminum space frame weighing just 42 kg (93 lbs), the 917 featured fiberglass bodywork and a distinctive low-slung profile. Its heart was an air-cooled, naturally aspirated flat-12 engine ranging from 4.5 to 4.9 liters in endurance form, producing around 580–630 horsepower. This power was delivered through a five-speed manual transmission, enabling top speeds well over 220 mph (354 km/h) — and, in long-tail form, close to 240 mph (386 km/h) at Le Mans.
