Macro photo of a poppy button. Striking is the large poppy, Papaver rhoeas, often seen in large numbers on verges or embankments along newly constructed roads in clay regions. But when the soil is left alone it gradually disappears. The dark scarlet colour of the rather large flowers is also striking in the grain fields where it originally has its home. It is known that after the First World War the battlefields in northern France turned red from the many poppies that germinated in the areas where the trenches and mass graves were. The Poppy therefore became the symbol for the veterans of that Great War.
