This memorial (spomenik) in Podgarić was placed in 1967 and was designed by Dušan Džamonja. It is a memorial to the 1941 uprising of the Communist Party of Yugoslavia against German occupation.
The plaque reads: "Here are buried 900 soldiers from the wider Moslavine area who sacrificed their lives for the freedom and independence of our nation during the National Liberation struggle from 1941 to 1945."
The monument stands on a hill in the small town of Podgarić, where it towers over an artificial lake. The structure was commissioned by Tito, Yugoslavia's longtime dictator. Tito ordered the creation of a number of similar monuments to World War II sites across Yugoslavia.
These abstract monuments were meant to symbolise power and triumph. They were unfortunately poorly maintained after Yugoslavia disintegrated. I visited these and a series of other imposing spomeniks during a solo photo trip in 2023.
