About ‘Plitvice Lakes’ by Angelique Raaijmakers

In 2026, we went on a tour of the Balkans, and naturally a visit to the Plitvice Lakes was a must.

The Plitvice Lakes (Plitvička jezera) in Croatia form the country’s oldest and largest national park. This world-famous UNESCO World Heritage Site comprises 16 emerald-green and turquoise lakes and over 90 waterfalls, linked by wooden boardwalks amidst vast forests.

Over the centuries, a natural process involving limestone (travertine) has created natural dams that divide the flowing water into a series of terraced lakes.

The lakes welcome thousands of visitors from all over the world every day. I was therefore very surprised to be able to take this photo without any visitors in it. In the distance, you can just make out a few legs, but my photos'are unedited, so I’ve left it as it is.

The turquoise colour is characteristic of the water at the Plitvice Lakes. I can highly recommend that anyone in the area be sure to pay a visit. It’s well worth the entrance fee.
It was a day to remember – so beautiful. I thoroughly enjoyed it!!

I can picture this photo as a wallpaper, serving as a source of tranquillity.
