Pinken in the surf, Hendrik Willem Mesdag, ca. 1875 - ca. 1885 Mesdag was fascinated by the sea, fishermen and their ?pinken'. These ships had a flat bottom, so they could easily sail onto the beach. Pinken in the surf depicts the moment when the fresh fish catch is distributed. With its wide format and bold brushstrokes, Mesdag elevated an everyday scene into a monumental composition.
