Alfama is Lisbon's oldest neighbourhood, located between São Jorge Castle and the Tagus River. The name 'alfama' comes from the Arabic al hamma, meaning something like 'baths' or 'fountains'. The district is a well-known draw for tourists, mainly because of its many old buildings, fado bars and restaurants. There are many winding streets and alleys.
